You should charge for the work and the result, not only for your time. Below are four pricing models, the factors that change a price, and what we charge at Websnoogie in Omaha.
What you are pricing
Web design covers many jobs, from one plain page to a full online store. A designer plans the layout, colors and images. A developer writes the code that makes the site work.
Our work covers web design and web development. List every job in the quote, so you and the client agree on what the price covers.
Four ways to price web design
Most pricing falls into one of four models. Pick the one that fits the job.
Project-based pricing. You quote one price for the whole job. This works well when the scope is clear. We use it: a new website with up to 5 pages plus a contact page costs $300.
Hourly rates. You bill for each hour of work. It fits jobs where the scope is not clear at the start. Give the client an estimate of the hours and send regular updates.
Retainers. The client pays a set amount each month, and you stay available for updates and maintenance. You get steady income, and the client gets a site that someone looks after. Our local SEO plan works this way: it is $190 a month.
Value-based pricing. You set the price by what the site is worth to the client, not by the hours you work. It fits projects that bring the client a lot of new business. A skilled designer can charge more for this kind of work.
What changes the price
Scope. A simple refresh costs less than a new online store.
Experience. A designer with a long track record can charge more. We have 20+ years of web design experience.
Location. Designers in big cities often charge more than designers in smaller markets.
Client budget. Learn what the client can spend and what others in their industry pay.

How to talk about price
Explain what the price includes, such as the number of pages, rounds of changes, hosting and the time frame. Put it in writing.
Say what is not included. Extra pages, new photos and later changes are common extras. A clear list stops arguments after the work starts.
Ask for part of the payment before you begin. Then the client has a stake in the job, and you can plan your time.
