Cash App, formerly named Square Cash, is a mobile payment service and digital wallet for American consumers. Block, Inc. operates it. Users send and receive money, hold a debit card, buy stocks and bitcoin, and file taxes in the app.

History of Cash App

Creator: Jack Dorsey and Brian Grassadonia, at Block, Inc. (then Square, Inc.). Year: 2013.

Block, Inc., then named Square, Inc., launched Cash App on October 13, 2013. The first name was Square Cash. The service let users send money with a debit card by email or text message, no matter which bank each person used. Block cofounder Jack Dorsey and Brian Grassadonia contributed to the product. Square Cash let users send up to US$2,500 a week in several transactions or all at once. It worked only in the United States. In August 2014, Block said that users had sent hundreds of millions of dollars to one another.

In March 2015, Square introduced Square Cash for businesses. Each user could create a unique username, called a cashtag, to send and receive money. A cashtag starts with a dollar sign. In September 2016, Cash App announced instant deposit. Deposits posted at once for a 1% fee, and otherwise posted on the next business day. Block also added virtual payment cards for purchases on websites and apps. Later, the service added debit cards, savings accounts, bitcoin and stock investing, tax filing and personal loans. It was then rebranded as Cash App.

As of 2024, Cash App runs as a mobile app-based digital wallet. A Pew Research Center report from September 2022 found that 26% of United States adults had used the app at least once. The same report found that lower-income adults were the most likely to use it over other payment apps. Block lists 57 million users for 2024.

Changelog and latest update

In November 2021, Block opened Cash App to people aged 13 and older. Users could deposit money, spend it and send it to friends. Minors could not use investing or bitcoin features. A parent or guardian had to approve their account. In August 2023, Block announced that it would close Cash App in the European Union. Those operations used the Verse brand. The reason was a lack of growth and profitability. A service outage on September 7 and 8, 2023, affected peer-to-peer payments and cash card purchases. Block said service was restored by September 8.

In February 2024, the service reported 57 million monthly transacting user accounts. For 2023, it reported US$14.7 billion in revenue. It also reported US$248 billion in inflows. In June 2024, Block dropped its plan to launch Cash App in Australia1. In July 2024, Cash App said it would stop operations in the United Kingdom. The stop date was September 15, 2024. In August 2024, Cash App settled a US$15 million class action. The case covered data and security breaches at the service. The official Cash App newsroom also posted about a Spanish-language rollout, a Workday direct deposit partnership and Cash App Score access for lenders.

Usage examples

A cashtag is the username that a Cash App user chooses. It starts with a dollar sign, such as $YOURCASHTAG. A website can link to a cashtag, so that a visitor opens the cashtag page. The link is a plain URL, so no code library is needed. A cashtag page is public, so do not place private account data in a link. Replace YOURCASHTAG with your own cashtag in each example. The examples use only the public URL form and a standard command-line request.

Cashtag payment link
<a
href="https://cash.app/$YOURCASHTAG">
Pay with Cash App</a>

Creates a link to the Cash App page for the cashtag2. A visitor who clicks the link opens the cashtag page for that account. The dollar sign is part of the cashtag, so it stays in the URL. The text between the tags is the label the visitor sees on the page.

Check a cashtag page
curl -sI \
  "https://cash.app/$YOURCASHTAG"

Requests only the headers of the cashtag page. The first line of the reply holds the HTTP status code. A status of 200 means the page exists and loads. Use the check after a cashtag change to confirm that the link still works before the page goes live.

No promises, just a checked page

We do not promise that a Cash App payment page will bring you sales. No honest company can make that promise, so we will not make it either. What we do is make sure your cashtag sits on a page that explains the price and the product. The cashtag is the name people type to pay you.

We check the words around the cashtag on each page. The price, the product name and the way to pay must appear in plain text, so a visitor never has to guess. Search engines read the same text, so the page is easier for them to understand too.

Some clients start with no domain and no site at all. For those, our bundle is $24.99 for the domain plus $149 for CMS hosting.Delivery takes 3 to 5 days once we have your details. Local search work costs $190 a month, and we can add it to any plan.
