A dedicated server is a type of Internet hosting. A client leases one whole physical server. No other customers share it. The client chooses the operating system, the hardware setup and the software.
History of Dedicated server
Creator: No single creator; the service developed with commercial data centers and hosting providers.
A shared server holds the sites of many clients. A dedicated server gives one client the whole machine. The client controls the hardware. The client also controls the operating system and the software. This gives more room to choose than shared hosting.
Dedicated servers sit in data centers. These centers often have redundant power sources. They also have heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. In most dedicated plans, the host owns the hardware. It leases the hardware to the client. A colocation plan is different. The client owns the server there. The provider supplies space, power and connectivity.
A dedicated server usually gives higher performance. It gives greater security. It gives more reliability. It gives more admin control than shared hosting. It costs more. So it is most common for websites and applications. Those often have heavy traffic. Or they have special performance and security needs.
Some hosts offer managed hosting. It covers physical servers, virtual servers and hybrid setups. Hybrid setups combine both. The host takes over most of the work. That includes security, memory, storage and IT support. Managed hosting also includes monitoring. It includes software updates and technical support. Unmanaged hosting leaves the server work to the client.
The operating system choice depends on price. It depends on availability. It depends on how well each provider's staff know it. Linux and Unix variants are often included at no charge. Microsoft Windows Server comes through a licensing program. That program is for hosting providers. Red Hat Enterprise Linux costs a monthly fee. Debian, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD are free.
Changelog and latest update
Bandwidth use has changed over time. It shifted from a per megabit usage model to a per gigabyte usage model. Bandwidth was traditionally measured as line speed, in bits per second.
The 95th percentile method measures data speed. It measures every five minutes for a month. It drops the top five percent of the measurements. It bills the next highest value. Unmetered billing caps the top line speed. The provider sets that cap at the switch. Unmetered billing usually costs extra.
Bandwidth pooling is one reason customers rent dedicated servers. It gives access to high powered bandwidth. Many hosts include a service level agreement (SLA) based on network uptime. Higher quality providers usually guarantee 99 to 100 percent uptime.1 They use redundant hardware. They use several upstream networks.
Wikipedia notes that no industry standard exists. It does not define the role of a dedicated server provider. Hosts use the same terms, such as fully managed. Each one defines them in its own way. Read the service description before you compare two plans.
Latest update: Debian 13.7, 2026-09-12
The Debian News page lists Debian 13.7 as released on 12 September 2026. The same page lists Debian 12.15, released on 11 July 2026. Wikipedia names Debian as a Linux distribution. Many dedicated servers include it at no charge.
Usage examples
Admins manage a dedicated server over Secure Shell (SSH). They also use the management controller on its motherboard. The examples show a power query. It uses the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) tool. They also show a hardware summary. They show a key-based login. They show pending package updates on a Debian server.
export IPMI_PASSWORD='replace-with-bmc-password'
ipmitool -I lanplus -H 198.51.100.20 -U admin -E power status
# sample output: Chassis Power is onThe ipmitool command sends requests over the network. It reaches the baseboard management controller (BMC). It works even when the operating system is down. The -E option reads the password from the IPMI_PASSWORD variable. So the password stays out of the command history. The power status command prints whether the chassis is on.
lscpu | grep -E 'Model name|^CPU\(s\)'
free -h
lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,TYPE,MOUNTPOINTThe lscpu command lists the processor model. It also lists the number of logical CPUs. The free command reports memory. The lsblk command lists each disk, its size and its mount point. These three reports show what the server holds.
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 admin@198.51.100.20This command logs in with a private key. The key must match the public key on the server. A key login keeps the password off the network. The address 198.51.100.20 is a documentation address. Replace it with the server address from the provider.
sudo apt update
apt list --upgradableThe apt update command refreshes the package lists from the Debian mirrors. The apt list command with --upgradable prints each package with a newer version. The client reviews the list. Then the client applies the security updates on a planned schedule.

One whole server, or a shared plan? Pick by need
There are two ways to run a website on a server. A shared plan splits one machine among many sites and costs less each month. A dedicated server gives one customer the whole machine and costs more. Neither choice is better in every case. The right one depends on how much traffic your site handles, what software it runs and how much control you need.
Most small businesses do not need a dedicated server. For a domain with CMS hosting, the cost is $24.99 plus $149, and non-CMS hosting runs $129 each year. Both plan types include 99.999% uptime, free SSL and daily backups.
Our web design work spans 20+ years. That experience helps us tell you which option fits before you spend more. If you already run a server and want help, we will review it with you. A new website is a single $300 payment, and most launches happen within 3 to 5 days.
