Wix is a cloud-based website builder from Wix.com Ltd., an Israeli software company. It lets users create HyperText Markup Language (HTML5) websites with drag-and-drop editing, and it hosts the finished sites on its own servers. Wix is a web design platform that also offers domain registration and online stores.

History of Wix

Creator: Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami and Giora Kaplan. Year: 2006.

Wix was set up in 2006. Israeli developers started it. They were Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami and Giora Kaplan. Its main offices are in Tel Aviv. Investors include Insight Venture Partners and Mangrove Capital Partners. Bessemer Venture Partners, DAG Ventures and Benchmark Capital also backed the firm.

Wix began an open beta in 2007. The platform ran on Adobe Flash. By April 2010 Wix had 3.5 million users. It had US$10 million in Series C money. In March 2011 it had 8.5 million users. It got US$40 million in Series D money. Its total money reached US$61 million.

In March 2012 Wix made an HTML5 site builder. It replaced the Flash tech. By August 2013 the platform had more than 34 million users who had signed up. Wix made its first public stock sale on NASDAQ on 5 November 2013. It raised about US$127 million.

In June 2016 Wix brought out Wix ADI. ADI stands for Artificial Design Intelligence. It uses artificial intelligence to design sites. In 2017 Wix bought DeviantArt for US$36 million. By June 2024 Wix said it had more than 260 million users worldwide.

In 2020 Wix revenue rose to $989 million. That was a 30 percent rise from the year before. At the end of 2020 the firm had 5.5 million paid subscriptions. That was a 22 percent rise on 2019. The growth came mainly from businesses that moved online during the coronavirus pandemic.

In May 2026 Wix announced layoffs of about 1,000 employees. That was 20 percent of its workforce. Its CEO, Avishai Abrahami, gave two reasons. One was the need to restructure around artificial intelligence. The other was the rise of the Israeli shekel against the US dollar.

Latest update: Press release, Base44 Google Ads integration, 2026-09-28

The Wix press room lists a press release dated 28 September 2026. Its title is Base44 Integrates Native Google Ads Campaign Management for App Builders. It is the newest dated item on the press room page. The page footer shows a copyright from 2006 to 2026 for Wix.com, Inc.

Usage examples

The examples use Velo, the Wix development platform that adds code to a Wix site, and one default address pattern. Velo modules such as wix-location and wix-data are JavaScript modules that run in the Wix site page. The first example moves a visitor to another page when a button is clicked. The second example reads the items from a data collection. The third example shows the default address format of a free Wix site.

Button that opens a page
import wixLocation from 'wix-location';

$w.onReady(function () {
  $w('#button1').onClick(() => {
    wixLocation.to('/contact');
  });
});

The import line loads the wix-location module. The onReady function runs when the page has loaded. When a visitor clicks the button with the id button1, the wixLocation.to call moves the visitor to the /contact page of the same site.

Read items from a collection
import wixData from 'wix-data';

wixData.query('Products')
  .find()
  .then((results) => {
    console.log(results.items);
  });

The wix-data module reads the records of a site collection. The query call names the collection Products, and find returns the matching records. The then function runs when the request completes, and it logs the list of items.

Default address of a free site
https://mysite.wixsite.com/mysite

A Wix site without a custom domain uses an address on the wixsite.com domain. The first part of the address is the site name chosen by the owner, and the second part is the page path. A custom domain replaces this address when the owner connects one.

Three things to check on a Wix site

Before you move or rebuild a Wix site, check three things. First, confirm who owns the domain name and where its records point. Second, list which pages, images and forms you need to keep. Third, send a test message through the contact form and confirm it reaches your inbox. A gap in any one of these can leave a business without calls for days.

We check those three items on every move. If a page cannot move cleanly, we rebuild it on the new host with the same words and pictures. Transfers of normal-size WordPress sites are free. Larger sites cost $199 one time. We are not affiliated with Wix, and we do not speak for that company. We bring more than 20 years of web design experience to your move.
